Gingrich: bring back child labor
In the eyes of Republicans, the 19t’h century was a time of economic and social glory. Scrooge was free to be Scrooge, there was no left-wing media to harass him. The average Jacob worked 16 hours a day down mill for subsistence pay, ideally in a company town where he could be enslaved by debt to the company. Better still: the engineered poverty of the workers could be leveraged so as to compel them to, by necessity, send their kids into the factories to be paid a fraction of what their parents would be paid, all while facing the same dangerous (no OSHA then!), if not deadly, working conditions that adults faced. But that’s not the end of this Dickensian glory! The best part was that the kids, with their long hours at the mill don’t get educations or the slightest glimpse of any better world, and as a result ultimately become slaves just like their parents! Rinse and repeat. And Profit!!!
Kids today, and the poor in general, just don’t have this kind of work ethic any more. Are you unable to get ahead because your kid is prevented by Socialist, Big Government intervention from earning his/her keep by performing menial labor? Newt’s your man in 2012.
